Carl E. "Butch" Sawyer, 82, born on August 7, 1942 in Marion to the late Carl M. and Grace L. (Koenig) Sawyer, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, in Marysville, surrounded by his loving family after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Butch was a man whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many, always making time to lend a helping hand and support those around him.
Butch devoted his career to sales, beginning at Hall-Beck Office Supply in Marion before embarking on a journey with his own company, Office-Wise. Along the way, he also worked as an associate at the Denzer Funeral Home, and later, the Denzer, Farison & Hottinger Funeral Home. However, the most fulfilling part of his professional life began when he started with the Midwest Casket Company, which later became known as Astral Industries. His steadfast determination and love for people shone through as he continued his work in the funeral industry, serving at the Boyd Funeral Home during the 1990s and early 2000s. Even until the end, Butch was active with his company, Sawyer Funeral Supply and Paragon Caskets, and remained dedicated to helping others as a funeral associate at the Ingram and Wilson Funeral Homes, until his health dictated a needed slowing down.
Butch was a proud 1960 graduate of Harding High School, and his accomplishments extended beyond the world of sales. He served on the Pleasant Township Fire and EMS and lent his support to the Marion County Sheriff's Auxiliary. As a former member of the Marion Noon Lion's Club, Butch's heart was always committed to service. An active, lifelong member of Grace Life Church, previously Salem Evangelical Church, he embraced the spirit of community and faith.
His personality was defined by a selfless love for people and an unrelenting willingness to help others. Butch cherished every moment spent with his wife, Susanne (Sautter) Sawyer, and his beloved sister, Carolyn (Pete) Hittenrauch. His legacy continues through his niece, Christina (John) Smelcer, and great niece and nephews, Grace, Jacob, and Joshua Smelcer. Butch is also survived by his daughters, Kim and Laurie.
A passionate fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Butch enjoyed collecting funeral memorabilia and could often be found watching reruns of "The Johnny Carson Show." These various interests painted the picture of a man who lived life to the fullest, making memories with family and friends that will be cherished forever.
Butch will be remembered not just for his remarkable career and accomplishments, but for the genuine love he had for those around him. He touched the hearts of many, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, joy, and compassion that will endure in the stories shared by family and friends.
