Donald G. Russell, 101, a skilled carpenter who dedicated his life to the craft, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at his residence in Raymond.
Born in Belle Center on June 19, 1922, Donald was the son of the late Jess and Emma (Grappy) Russell. On August 25, 1946 in Perrysburg, he married his wife of over 66 years, Florence (King) Russell, and she passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gary Howe and his brothers, Jim, Robert and Dick Russell.
Donald's career as a carpenter was marked by his talent and precision. Starting at Goff Lumber in West Mansfield before joining the Delaware Lumber Company/Elephant Lumber Company for 25 years, and Baldauf Lumber in Marion. He was well-known among contractors for his exceptional ability in drawing house plans. During World War II, Donald proudly served in the United States Navy, demonstrating his commitment to his country. After the war, he returned home and continued to excel in his career while also pursuing his hobbies and interests. An avid reader, Donald always had a book in hand and would diligently read through an entire newspaper from front to back. His love for travel, sparked by a high school trip to California, led him to explore new places with Florence in their cherished motorhome. Beyond his professional achievements, Donald's proudest accomplishments stemmed from his involvement with the Liberty Township Fire Department, the Millcreek Church of Christ and the Lion's Club. As an active member of the church throughout his life, he played a vital role in the youth program. Additionally, he dedicated nearly 60 years of service to the Lion's Club, leaving a lasting impact on his community.
Donald is survived by his loving children, Barbara Howe of Las Vegas, NV and Donald E. Russell of Raymond; grandchildren Allison Howe and Brian Howe; and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Emma, and Elise Howe, and Simon Perry.
The visitation and funeral service to honor Donald's life will be held at Millcreek Church of Christ in Raymond on April 27th, 2024. The visitation will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow next to his wife at the Millcreek Cemetery where Military Honors will be conducted by the Union County Honor Guard. Memorial contributions can be made to the Youth Program at the Millcreek Church of Christ.
