Ernest A. "Ernie" LeVan Ernest A. "Ernie" LeVan, age 96, of West Mansfield died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at The Homestead of Logan Acres Nursing Center. He operated the City Service Station/Citgo for over 30 years and took pride in the fact that a gas station still remains in operation today at the same location. A 1936 graduate of West Mansfield High School, Ernie was a proud veteran of World War II having served in the US Army Ohio 37th Division from February 8, 1941 until August 5, 1945. He spent 3½ years in the South Pacific and recalled vividly the day he was discharged was the day that the first Atomic Bomb was dropped. He was a charter member of the West Mansfield American Legion and the West Mansfield Conservation Club, a member of the New Salem Lutheran Church, and a former member of the West Mansfield Fire Department. His hobbies included gardening, square dancing and calling square dances, and working with his Wheel horse garden tractors. He was born November 28, 1917, near Zane Caverns to the late William F. and Bernice Steadman LeVan. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Andrea Lehman, 4 sisters, Bertha Craig, Ida Liggitt, Lorena McMahon, and Gertrude Wise; and 3 brothers, Richard, Fred, and Bernard LeVan. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Helen Nicol LeVan, to whom he was married on October 31, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church; a daughter, Linda (Richard ) Lehman, Pandora; 2 sons, David (Cheryl) LeVan, West Mansfield; and Ronald (Judy) LeVan, Colorado Springs, CO; 9 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 3-7 P.M. Monday, June 23, 2014 at Mannasmith-Schnurrenberger Funeral Home, West Mansfield, with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 P.M. Monday with Jack Knox officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 603 will take place in mid-July at Greenlawn Cemetery upon the arrival of family from overseas.
