Hershel P. “Phil” Slone, 70, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 5, 2023 at Select Specialty Hospital in Columbus, surrounded by loving family, following many months of failing health.
Born April 21, 1953 in Garner, KY, he was the son of the late Lindsey and Alice Slone. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Bonnie Faye; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald Dean (Cathy) Slone; and a brother-in-law, James Norris.
A 1971 graduate of Harding High School, Phil retired from Armco/Marion Steel/Nucor where he worked as a crane operator for many years. He had many things he enjoyed, his favorite being watching the UK Wildcats play basketball while eating popcorn and of course, drinking his beloved Diet Mt. Dew. He enjoyed gardening, watching old westerns, and listening to older country music. He always looked forward to hosting family gatherings at his house, especially during the holidays. He loved Christmas and listening to Christmas music. In his younger years, he loved playing basketball, especially with his family and friends and enjoyed sports cars.
He is survived by brothers and sisters, Avenell (Ron) Gayheart of Cardington, Ken “Buddy” (Brenda) Slone of Marion, Betty Norris of Marion, Ed “Glen” (Sandy) Slone of Big Island and Donna (Paul) Miller of Ponce Inlet, FL; several nieces and nephews, whom he considered and treated like his own children; a “not quite as handsome” special cousin that was like a brother, Herman Slone of Garner, KY; along with many more cousins and other extended family and friends.
