Melvin E. "Gene" Atherton Melvin E. "Gene" Atherton, age 74, of Marysville died Friday, August 10, 2012, at Heartland of Marysville with his daughters at his side following an extended illness. Gene was employed for nearly 20 years in maintenance with Nestle (Westreco) and previously worked many years with Scotts. A hard working and capable man, Gene also held a second job for many years as a carpenter/contractor and was very proud to have built the home in which his family was raised. He was a 1956 graduate of Ostrander High School and served in the Ohio National Guard from 1956-1958. He enjoyed his affiliation with the Marysville Eagles Aerie #3506 and Marysville Moose Lodge #1651 but was happiest in the comfort of his own home and working around his property. He will be remembered as a wonderful father and grandfather, a giving and proud man, and as a Jack-of-all-Trades. He was born March 8, 1938, in Delaware to the late Royden and Maple Geyer Atherton. He was preceded in death by his son, Melvin Atherton, on August 7, 1989, and his former spouse and mother of his children, Sondra L. Benedict. Survivors include his daughters, Melinda (George) Heil, Grove City; and Michele (David) Palmer, Marysville; his daughter-in-law, Robin Robins, Columbus; 5 grandchildren, Harley Heil, Justus Heil, Daniel Atherton, Mark Atherton, and Derrick Palmer; his sister, Brenda Hamilton, Ostrander; 2 brothers, Marvin Atherton and Larry (Sharon) Atherton, each of Richwood; and several nieces and nephews. Friends and family may gather to celebrate Gene's life on Sunday, August 19, 2012, from 2-4 p.m. at Mannasmith Funeral Home. A short prayer service will take place at the conclusion of calling hours and interment will be held at a later date.
