Shirley Rose Applegate

March 27, 1938 — January 29, 2025

Marysville

Shirley R. Applegate, 86, of Marysville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at Bluebird of Marysville.

Shirley worked as a hairdresser all of her life, having a shop in her basement in their 4th St. home for 58 years. The chair in that shop was certainly known for the gossip and town news that went through it on a daily basis over the years. She will also be remembered for her time spent working part-time on the lottery machine at the Corner Carryout for 30 years and volunteering with Memorial Mobile Meals. Shirley enjoyed playing the lottery, playing bingo, going to the casino, watching her favorite teams, the Cincinnati Reds and The Ohio State Buckeyes, but she especially enjoyed attending the sporting events of her grandchildren.

Born March 27, 1938 in Bellefontaine, she was the daughter of the late Halley and Blanche (LeVan) Ackley. On January 18, 1959 at the East Liberty United Methodist Church, she married her husband of 55 years, Lee Applegate, and he preceded her in death on January 28, 2014. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, Steve Applegate her brothers, Merle, Robert and Albert Ackley; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen Ackley.

She is survived by her daughter, Sherrie (Kelly) Fahey of Barneveld, WI; grandchildren, Matthew Fahey and Nicole Fahey, both of Barneveld, WI; a brother, Dave (Phyllis) Ackley of West Liberty; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Dave) Ballman and Becky Ackley; along with numerous nieces, nephews and her dear friend and neighbor of many years, Ercell Baldwin.

The family would like give a special “Thank You” to Gai Collens, who she loved and thought of her as her own daughter, and Barbara Ballman for all their help to mom the last couple of years. You both made and took mom whatever she needed at a moment's notice. You provided her companionship and company. We all appreciate you more than you will ever know. Also, a special “Thank You” to the staff and residents of the Bluebird of Marysville. You have become mom's friends and family, providing her with smiles and laughter on a daily basis. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
