Virginia Louise "Gennie" Amerine, 86, of Marion and formerly of West Mansfield, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Community Health Center in Marion with loving family by her side.
Gennie grew up in Newport News, VA and graduated from Newport News High School. She moved to West Mansfield in 1954. She worked as a cashier at the former Garvin's, now Field's IGA in West Mansfield, retiring in 1994.
A member of the West Mansfield Church of Christ, she enjoyed camping and reading, but her greatest joy came from her card ministry. She will be fondly remembered by many for the greeting cards they received. She sent birthday cards, get well cards, sympathy cards, thinking of you cards, cards to shut-ins. She touched everyone with a card.
The youngest of four children, she was born October 8, 1933 in Bar Harbor, ME, the daughter of the late Carlton and Madeline (Hodgkins) Garland. On December 22, 1952, she married her husband of nearly 45 years, Paul F. Amerine and he preceded her in death on August 2, 1997. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
She is survived by her children, Diana Grooms of Marion, Darlene (Rodger) Lewis of Richwood and Kenneth (Sherrie) Amerine of Marion; grandchildren, Natalie (Jamie) Spears, Nicole (Jason) Gheen, Logan (Christine) Harmon, Christina (Jon) Guylas, Jason Amerine, Carlee (David Hauptman) Swihart, Nathan (Tia) Amerine and Katrina (Kyle) Edwards; 14 great grandchildren; a great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
